Otolaryngologist and orthodontist – comprehensive treatment for children
Impaired nasal breathing can very often lead to malocclusion in children.
First and foremost, you should consult an ENT specialist to restore nasal breathing, treat inflamed tonsils (adenoids and tonsils), vasomotor and allergic rhinitis, and only then see an orthodontist to correct the malocclusion.
When a child’s teeth erupt, they move toward each other. The signal for growth to stop is when the upper and lower teeth meet. If the child cannot breathe through the nose due to a runny nose or difficulty breathing, the mouth remains constantly open. Consequently, the teeth grow incorrectly, the tongue is not in the correct position in the mouth, the palate narrows, and this leads to an anomaly — an improper bite. The body cannot correct this on its own; medical intervention is required.
It is important to understand that not only the bite but also the child’s appearance is at risk. When the lower jaw is open, the skin of the lower eyelids eventually turns slightly outward, dark circles appear under the eyes due to insufficient oxygen supply to the body, the face changes shape, the cheekbones are absent, the head tilts forward, and posture changes. In addition, with a chronic lack of oxygen in the blood, the child often has difficulty concentrating, tires quickly, and appears more lethargic compared to their peers.
For diagnosis, a lateral view X-ray of the head must be taken. It shows enlarged adenoids; the nasal passage can be measured with a ruler and compared to the norm; and changes in the cervical vertebrae are also visible.
Even if an orthodontist provides the best treatment, once the dental appliances are removed, the malocclusion will return, and a relapse will occur — the child’s bite will change again.
Remember that “they’ll outgrow it” is not the best argument; in adulthood, this will lead to complex surgical interventions.
