Surgical correction of bite
Dental and jaw disorders and malocclusion — correction achieved through surgical intervention. Subsequently, comprehensive treatment using orthodontic appliances (braces, aligners, etc.). Patients have a range of issues such as: periodontal disease, malocclusion, facial asymmetry, aesthetic dental defects, and facial deformities.
- functional disorders:
- difficulty chewing food (small, large upper or lower jaw);
- difficulty closing the mouth;
- snoring;
- difficulty biting off food, etc.
Which doctors can a patient consult? A dentist, orthodontist, or maxillofacial surgeon.
Complaints that may concern the patient:
- malocclusion;
- crooked bite;
- bleeding gums;
- protruding or receding chin;
- lips that do not close;
- inability to close the mouth and bite off food;
- teeth that are too large to fit in the jaw;
- facial asymmetry, asymmetrical cheeks (facial distortion), etc.
Solving these problems requires a comprehensive approach, which includes examining patients with malocclusion and subsequent orthodontic (using braces) and surgical treatment.
Examinations:
- orthopantomography (panoramic X-ray);
- computed tomography (CT) of the jaws and temporomandibular joints;
- teleroentgenography;
- fabrication of diagnostic jaw models or computer scanning of the jaws;
- electromyography of the masticatory muscles, etc.
After the diagnostic evaluation, the orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon determine the type of orthodontic condition (skeletal or dentoalveolar), establish a diagnosis, and select the most optimal treatment plan, which may include:
- wisdom tooth extraction;
- treatment with braces;
- surgical jaw expansion (jaw distraction);
- surgical correction of the bite (jaw advancement — orthognathic surgery);
- surgical enlargement or reduction of the jaw;
- chin augmentation, etc.
Modern diagnostic methods such as computed tomography (CT), cephalometry, 3D scanning, and modeling allow for the patient to be treated or operated on virtually first, with visualization of the future result, and then proceed with treatment or surgery, making the treatment outcome predictable and, consequently, successful.
Rehabilitation after bite correction surgery
Recovery after surgery is a lengthy process, the results of which depend on adherence to the doctor’s recommendations. During this period, the patient wears a splint, which makes it impossible to perform normal physiological actions, such as yawning, blowing one’s nose, etc.
- key stages of rehabilitation:
- taking antibiotics to prevent bacterial infections.
- wearing a rigid splint immediately after the procedure.
- regular follow-up visits to monitor progress.
- removal of sutures in 2-3 weeks.
- if the healing of soft and bone tissues proceeds normally, the doctor removes the jaw screws in 2-4 months.
During recovery, the patient may experience pain and swelling. It is important to consult a doctor in a timely manner for an examination and consultation.
