Bone regeneration
Bone grafting in dentistry is a necessary component of implantation when there is a lack of bone tissue. This procedure involves restoration of the jaw bone in the place of the missing tooth.
When bone regeneration is needed
Manipulation is provided in the following cases:
- When the patient has insufficient bone to place the implant
- In a one-time operation, when a tooth is removed and an implant is placed immediately
- Planned procedure
- Immediately after removal (the tooth was removed — the bone was filled in)
Types of bone regeneration
Bone regeneration in dentistry includes several types of procedures, each of which is used depending on a specific clinical situation. Here are the main types of bone regeneration surgery:
- Sinus lifting: The procedure of raising the bottom of the maxillary sinus to increase the volume of bone tissue in the back part of the upper jaw. There are open and closed sinus lifting.
- Bone autotransplantation: Using the patient’s bone tissue taken from another part of the body to fill the deficiency.
- Allo-implants: Use of bone materials from a human donor processed to avoid rejection and infections.
- Xenografts: The use of bone materials of animal origin, usually bovine bone, to replace lost bone tissue.
- Synthetic bone substitutes: Use of artificial materials such as hydroxyapatite or tricalcium phosphate to stimulate the growth of new bone tissue.
- Splitting the alveolar ridge: Widening the narrow alveolar ridge by splitting the bone to create enough bone volume for implantation.
When can an implant be installed after bone regeneration surgery?
Implantation takes place either at the same time as the procedure, or postponed for 4-6-8 months. It depends on a certain set of factors:
- the size of the bone defect.
- upper or lower jaw.
- how the restoration took place, with bone or own material.
- density of the bone structure.
- at the discretion and according to the doctor’s recommendations.
Types of bone material
The procedure uses different types of materials:
- Artificial or derived from animals.
- Autograft, i.e. taking bone from the patient directly, for example, from a tooth tubercle, and is implanted on titanium pins in the place where bone regeneration surgery is required.
- Mixed, where there are synthetics and animal bone.
What does the price of bone grafting depend on?
Pricing depends on:
- The volume of bone grafting, that is, how many millimeters of bone must be restored and, accordingly, in how many places.
- Type of material.
Prescriptions and recommendations after the procedure
- A course of antibiotics
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory meds
- Limit hot drinks, soups from 3 to 5 days
- Careful brushing of the teeth in the area of the operation
- Do not rinse for 3-5 days, that is, after eating or after brushing teeth, just mouth baths in the area where the stitches were applied
- If sinus lifting operations were performed in parallel with Bone regeneration surgery, air travel is prohibited
Contraindications
- AIDS.
- HIV.
- Advanced diabetes (when sugar is high, blood coagulation is impaired).
- Infectious diseases.
- Hepatitis B, C.
- Some serious autoimmune diseases and diseases associated with thyroid disorders.
Each of these methods has its own indications, contraindications and peculiarities of implementation, so the choice of a specific method is made by the dentist based on the individual needs of the patient.
