Removal of cysts
OMS Surgery (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) includes various procedures involving surgical intervention in the maxillofacial area. Cyst removal is one of the typical surgical procedures that may be performed within the scope of OMS. Below are several cases in which cyst removal may be required:
- cystic formations: cyst removal may be recommended when cystic lesions such as cystogranulomas, cyst-related defects, cysts, or tumors occur and require surgical intervention to remove them and restore the normal structure of the maxillofacial area;
- tooth extraction: if teeth have complex roots, cannot be safely removed, or if additional cystic areas need to be removed to gain access, cyst removal may be performed as part of the tooth extraction procedure;
- osteomyelitis: this is an infectious disease of the jawbone that may develop as a result of bacterial or fungal infection. Removal of the infected cyst may be necessary to eliminate the infection and restore healthy bone tissue;
- reconstructive surgery: in some cases, when the maxillofacial area requires reconstruction after trauma, congenital defects, or oncologic surgery, cyst removal may be necessary as preparation for reconstructive intervention.
Cyst removal within OMS is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The surgeon makes an incision or uses endoscopic access to reach and remove the cyst. After removal, the wound is closed and postoperative care is provided.
It is important to consult an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to assess your specific situation and determine the need for cyst removal and the treatment plan that best meets your needs.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure for cyst removal within OMS may include the following steps:
- preoperative preparation: before the procedure, you will undergo a preliminary examination, including a physical assessment and imaging studies (for example, computed tomography) to evaluate the condition of the cysts and plan the surgery. You may also receive instructions regarding preoperative measures, such as restrictions on food and fluid intake;
- anesthesia: before the procedure begins, anesthesia will be administered to ensure that you do not feel pain during surgery. This may be general anesthesia, when you are asleep during the operation, or local anesthesia with sedation, when you are relaxed and experience minimal discomfort;
- access to the cyst: the surgeon will make an incision in the skin or mucosa near the area where the cyst is located to gain access. Depending on the specific situation, access may be obtained through the oral cavity or through an external incision;
- cyst removal: the surgeon uses specialized instruments such as burs, drills, or cutting tools to remove the cyst. The cyst may be separated or incised to allow access and complete removal;
- bleeding control: during the procedure, the surgeon monitors and controls bleeding. If necessary, hemostatic agents or sutures are used to stop bleeding;
- wound closure: after the cyst is removed, the surgeon closes the wound with sutures or applies other wound-closure methods;
- postoperative period: after the procedure, you will be transferred to a recovery room following anesthesia. You may apply an ice compress to the surgical area to reduce swelling and pain. The doctor will provide postoperative care instructions, including medication use, physical activity restrictions, and a schedule for follow-up visits.
The postoperative period may vary depending on the extent of the surgery and your individual recovery. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and contact them if you have any questions or experience complications after surgery.
