Pediatric surgery
At any age, a baby needs a special approach — attentive, caring and professional. When it comes to surgical intervention, it is important that the child does not feel stress, and parents are calm about the result. At Astra Dent dentistry, surgery for children is easy and without fear. We remove baby teeth, adjust frenulums, stop bleeding — all this under the supervision of pediatricians who understand the psychology of young patients.
At Astra Dent, pediatric surgery is comfortable, professional and painless.
The appointment takes place in a children’s office, under anesthesia, using equipment adapted to children. The first consultation is free.
Why do parents choose Astra Dent for pediatric surgery?
When it comes to their child’s health, parents are looking for not just a good dentist, but a place where the baby will be calm, safe and comfortable. The Astra Dent network has created exactly such conditions. We have 14 branches in Kyiv and 1 more in Lviv, so parents can choose the location closest to home. We work every day from 9:00 to 21:00 – convenient even for families with a busy schedule. All branches have European equipment, and treatment protocols meet international standards. All this allows us to perform pediatric surgery qualitatively, without pain and with minimal stress for the child.
Approach to the child
We do not rush to put the baby in a chair – first we introduce them, talk, play. Our offices have a warm atmosphere, cartoons on the screen, bright interiors. Our doctors have game techniques and adaptation skills so that the child is not scared even at the first visit. If the patient feels anxious, we reduce the level of stress through communication, play or individually selected psychological techniques.
Treatment methods
We use only those methods that have proven their safety in pediatric practice. For anesthesia – application gels with a pleasant taste, which are suitable even for preschoolers. For more complex manipulations – medical sleep (with the consent of the parents and after consultation with the anesthesiologist). Also, dentistry has laser installations that allow bloodless and quick frenulum plastic surgery or stopping minor bleeding without stitches.
Specialized surgeons
In the surgical direction, pediatric dentists with specialized training work. These are not general dentists, but narrow specialists who work with children every day. They know the anatomical features of baby teeth, know how to prevent complications and carry out all manipulations as delicately as possible.
Equipment and safe technologies
We use vacuum aspiration systems, modern lasers, physiodispensers, computerized anesthesia systems. All equipment is certified, purchased from leading EU manufacturers. This minimizes the risk of injury and ensures accuracy even in complex procedures. Thanks to modern technologies, children recover quickly after interventions and are not afraid of repeated visits.
Minimal discomfort
The treatment is gentle – without harsh actions, with dosed anesthesia, under careful monitoring of the child’s condition. The doctor always explains what they are doing, uses tactile contact and voice guidance – all to make the baby feel protected. We also take into account the child’s pain threshold and do not allow painful sensations.
Direct contact with parents
Parents are always aware of what is planned to be done. The doctor discusses the surgical plan in advance, gives written recommendations before and after the procedure, and also stays in touch for additional questions. You will not be left without support at any stage – from the first consultation to the monitoring of healing.
How is the surgical admission of children at Astra Dent carried out?
Surgical intervention in pediatric dentistry requires a particularly delicate approach. At Astra Dent, each procedure is performed taking into account the child’s age, emotional state and clinical situation. The doctor first consults the parents, conducts an examination, draws up an individual treatment plan and explains all the stages. The child adapts to the office through play or communication with the staff. The procedures are performed under anesthesia, using modern equipment that allows us to reduce the duration of the intervention and minimize discomfort. Below are the main surgical procedures that are most often performed in our offices.
Extraction of milk teeth
Extraction of milk teeth is prescribed only according to indications. This is usually necessary when:
- a cyst or chronic inflammation has developed at the root;
- the tooth is severely damaged by caries and cannot be treated;
- the milk tooth has not fallen out on time and is preventing the eruption of a permanent one;
- there is a mobile tooth that injures the mucous membrane or causes bleeding;
- orthodontic treatment is planned, which requires the removal of individual teeth to form a correct bite.
Anaesthetic is selected individually. For very young children, the doctor uses an application gel – it dulls the sensitivity of the gums. If deeper anesthesia is required, infiltration anesthesia is used. In complex cases or if the child is very afraid, treatment under sedation is possible – in the presence of an anesthesiologist.
Proper planning of the extraction avoids a negative impact on the development of the bite. If the tooth is removed on time, permanent teeth erupt evenly, and the need for orthodontic treatment is subsequently reduced.
Removal in case of pathological resorption
Pathological resorption is a condition when the root of a baby tooth is destroyed prematurely or atypically. In such cases, the tooth loses stability, causes discomfort and can put pressure on neighboring structures.
Indications for surgery are:
- inflammatory processes spreading to the tissues around the tooth;
- risk of disruption of the eruption of a permanent tooth;
- displacement of other baby or permanent teeth due to loss of support.
Timely removal prevents complications – the formation of an incorrect bite, lack of space in the dentition, injury to the mucous membrane.
Replantation of a tooth after dislocation
If a child has been injured and one of the teeth has completely fallen out, it is important not to delay. Replantation is a procedure for returning a tooth to its place in a short time.
Procedure:
- the doctor examines the tooth, assesses its condition and the possibility of replantation;
- if there are no root fractures, the tooth is inserted back into the socket;
- fixed with a splint to the adjacent teeth;
- antibacterial therapy and observation are prescribed.
Such an intervention gives a chance to save the native tooth, to avoid implantation or orthopedic intervention in the future.
Correction of the frenulum
A short frenulum of the lip or tongue can cause:
- speech disorders (sound production, diction);
- difficulty breastfeeding in infants;
- malocclusion;
- limitation of tongue mobility.
The procedure is performed after consultation with a dentist and, if necessary, a speech therapist. At Astra Dent, laser devices are used to correct frenulums – this is:
- minimum intervention;
- precise incision without bleeding;
- tissue coagulation without suturing;
- quick healing (1-2 days);
- minimal discomfort for the child.
The correction lasts 10-15 minutes, and the result is noticeable immediately – the child opens his mouth better, eats, speaks.
How does a surgical procedure work?
A surgical procedure at a pediatric dentist consists of several clear stages. At Astra Dent, we follow transparent protocols — from the initial consultation to post-operative follow-up. This helps reduce the child’s fear, avoid complications, and make the treatment as safe as possible. Below is a description of how the procedure works.
Consultation, examination and X-ray
The appointment always begins with a detailed conversation with the parents. The doctor asks clarifying questions, analyzes complaints, learns about the child’s medical history. Then they conduct an examination of the oral cavity – assess the condition of the teeth, gums, bite, the presence of mobile or damaged teeth.
If necessary, an X-ray is taken – most often it is a targeted image. All X-ray machines at Astra Dent are digital, with minimal radiation exposure, certified for children. The image helps to see hidden pathologies, inflammation in the roots, the position of the rudiments of permanent teeth.
Psychological adaptation of the child
After the diagnosis, we do not immediately proceed to intervention. The child is given time to adapt – they are introduced to the office, shown the instruments in a playful way, allowed to sit in a chair and watch cartoons. If the child is afraid – the doctor communicates, tells what they will do, and uses game techniques to relieve tension.
This stage is very important, as it allows us to reduce the level of anxiety and avoid negative experiences. At Astra Dent, doctors undergo special training in child psychology – that is why we have positive contact with children even in difficult cases.
Anaesthesia
The type of analgesia is selected individually – depending on the age of the child, the complexity of the manipulation, the level of anxiety and the wishes of the parents. At Astra Dent, only safe drugs adapted for pediatric dentistry are used.
- Application anesthesia – a gel with an anesthetic effect that is applied to the gums. Suitable for simple procedures or as the first stage before the injection so that the child does not feel the injection.
- Infiltration anesthesia – a local injection that is performed after the application gel. The injection is administered slowly and carefully. The drugs are modern, do not cause allergies, have a quick and long-lasting effect.
- Sedation – is used in special cases: with high fear, long-term intervention or complex surgery. The child remains conscious, but feels calm and does not react to fear or pain. Sedation is performed by an anesthesiologist in a specially equipped room.
Monitoring systems during medical sleep
During the entire procedure, the child’s condition is under constant supervision. The room has modern monitoring systems that allow the anesthesiologist to respond to the slightest changes in a timely manner:
- pulse oximetry – determines the level of oxygen in the blood;
- ECG monitoring – reflects cardiac activity;
- respiration and blood pressure control;
- BIS monitoring – assesses the depth of sleep based on the electrical activity of the brain;
- assessment of brain functions – allows you to detect excessive sedation or excitement in time.
All these systems work simultaneously, thanks to which dental treatment under anesthesia is carried out safely, under full control and without risks to the child’s health.
The doctor always explains to the parents which method of anesthesia will be used, what alternatives are available and how the procedure will be carried out. Treatment takes place in a specially equipped inpatient department – Astra Clinic. There are comfortable wards where the child can stay after the intervention, and parents – to be nearby before and after the procedure. The department has a calm atmosphere. The medical staff takes care of every detail – from the temperature regime to the level of lighting.
Surgical intervention
The operation lasts from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the complexity. The doctor uses sterile instruments, individual sets, vacuum aspiration, if necessary – a laser. All actions are performed precisely, carefully, taking into account the anatomical features of the child’s jaw.
In the case of tooth extraction, a sterile napkin is applied after the intervention to stop the bleeding. If frenulum plastic surgery is performed – the tissues are immediately coagulated by a laser, sutures are usually not required. The doctor monitors the child’s condition during the procedure and can stop at any moment if the child needs a break.
Postoperative support: recommendations, care of the socket, diet
After the intervention, the doctor informs the parents in detail about further care. You will receive written recommendations that indicate:
- how to care for the wound;
- when the child can eat and drink;
- what foods to choose for the first few days (soft, cool, non-acidic);
- when to brush your child’s teeth and how to do it so as not to damage the area of the intervention;
- whether painkillers or antiseptics are needed;
- what to do if swelling or bleeding occurs.
The staff will also remind you of the phone numbers to contact in case of questions. All stages are discussed in a calm atmosphere so that parents do not worry and can act confidently.
Repeated examinations, removal of stitches (if necessary)
In complex cases or after laser procedures, the child comes for a repeated examination. If stitches were applied, they are removed after 5-7 days. The doctor assesses healing, checks for inflammation or discomfort. All manipulations are performed quickly and painlessly.
If the intervention did not require stitches, but there were inflammatory processes or the extraction of a complex tooth, a repeat appointment is scheduled in a few days to assess the condition of the oral cavity. This allows us to prevent complications and make sure that the child is recovering properly.
